More than we expected

I've had stayed there about 5 or 6 years ago so we knew what to expect. So we brought a sharp knife and cookware. We had Villa 8 which was a two Bedroom and had a nice view of the beach but still had a real nice tropical setting. The apartment was more the comfortable for the 4 of us and the Staff was just wonderful with all our concerns. If you get up by 5am you can heard the howling Monkeys. Liz the Activity young lady was great as well as the bar man at the pool side bar. The early morning security man even got me a hose to wash the car after going exploring through the woods and across the rivers. The maids came in every morning cleaned the baths two of them and changed the towels and made the bed. It’s not a 5 star resort by US standards but was clean and the beach was unspoiled and empty. They will arrange tours and fishing trips and anything you might need.

Relaxing family get away with great accommodations

if you are looking for a resort with a TPC approved golf course and an onsite golf pro and beauty shop this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a relaxing resort with plenty for a family to do in the Samara Beach area, this is it. There is a beautiful clean beach, a beautiful clean swimming pool, horseback riding, volleyball, soccer, zipline, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking. The restaurant on the property is first class and there are several first class restaurants in Samara. There are no televisions or radios which for me was great. Great snorkeling right off the beach.

Excellent resort!

If you like warm, tropical, sweet smelling air, incredible warm gentle surf, tasty food in the restaurant, helpful considerate staff and clean accommodations that are being upgraded even as I write this...then you will like this place. A lot.
Safe parking and grounds, helpful, friendly staff, spacious clean villas. They are sparsely furnished. You will have free wireless internet at the reception area, and you will have decent cell phone service. Water pressure in the villas was very good, the bed was firm and comfortable, the linens all clean. They came in daily to clean, scrubbed the floors down, etc.
The roads in Costa Rica from Liberia to Samara Beach are paved and fairly well marked. As you enter Samara Beach, turn left at the internet cafe just as you reach the edge of town, and take 160 and go south. About 1.5k you will see a large sign on the left across from the drive. I do very much recommend that you rent a GPS from the car rental places. It's very easy to drive here, they do left side driving, and the signs are universal enough that you can figure it out. There are a lot of gravel roads and many of them take you THROUGH the river instead of over it. Keep that in mind when you are choosing a vehicle. Cars may not have enough clearance and or traction to make it in some places.

I recently had the pleasure of spending time at this resort with a group totaling 30 people. Our group, being previously cautioned that most of Costa Rica is "third world", came in with limited expectations. I was overwhelmingly surprised at the picturesque setting of the grounds of the Hotel Villas Playa Samara.

Our group was warned that insects are everywhere. I loved having the "natural" insecticide (geckos) running everywhere. Being a biological control, the geckos offer no bad effects, and added to the rustic atmosphere. The children in our group were having contests to see whose room had the most geckos (the record was two). I did hear some strange sounds on the roof on occasion. I quickly learned that this was just the lizards moving about trying to find an adequate spot to sun themselves.

The condo that I was in had two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It was more than spacious enough for the seven of us that shared it. While not five star, it was just as good (if not better) than my home back in Canada. Even with the indoor accommodations, my preference was to fall asleep in the hammock on the patio . . . no I didn't get bitten by any bugs. :) The worst part about sleeping in the hammock was being woken by the birds in the morning perching on the line, staring at me as if they are contemplating whether or not to nibble on my toes.

Somewhere on the site there was always something being cleaned, repaired, painted, or upgraded. Given the standard of living in Costa Rica as a whole, the Hotel Villas Playas Samara is definitely taking great strides to improve guests overall experience.

While at this resort, some of the activities that we (my group) participated in were: snorkeling, fishing, dolphin watching, joining a group of local school children for a beach clean up, and shopping at roadside tables for local arts & crafts. If you are looking for an incredible outdoor, eco-style adventure, look no further Costa Rica´s Hotel Villas Playa Samara is the place.
